Project Manager : Project Manager Feb March 2012
12 Project Manager CHAPTERS NOTICEBOARD 23 FEBRUARY PMO SIG. UNIVERSITY OF CANBERRA RESEARCH PROJECT 29 FEBRUARY MONTHLY FORUMS RESUME, SPEAKERS TBA 14 MARCH FORUM WITH GUEST SPEAKER DR CHARLES PELLERIN, EX-DIRECTOR OF ASTROPHYSICS AT NASA DON’T MISS The March Forum features guest speaker Dr Charles Pellerin, NASA’s ex-Director of Astrophysics. Dr Pellerin is the creator of the 4-D system and author of How NASA Builds Teams. The topic of discussion is ‘4-D system – a proven way for leaders and teams to benchmark and build high performance’. I recently received an email from a young person seeking career advice. Already employed in project roles, he plans to extend his tertiary studies. Interestingly, he describes his “genuine PM experience as lacking”. So what is a ‘genuine’ PM experience? A career in project management offers many choices. Ideally, your experience will complement your education, and develop skills that can’t be learnt at university. These skills are valued by employers and will increase future earnings. Adding AIPM certification to your profile is extremely beneficial because employers and clients see it as professional validation that reduces their exposure to risk. AIPM delivers certification with the support of forums and SIGs; knowledge and research; professional development and competency standards; and recognition through awards programs. This year AIPM will launch new Portfolio Management Standards. Also, a University of Canberra research project will reveal its findings on project, program and portfolio maturity in government. Welcome back Sylvia Boyle who replaces Mike Kennedy as Lead for the PMO SIG, and welcome to Jim Muir who replaces Deb Mazlin as Lead for the PMM SIG. My sincere thanks to Mike and Deb for their tireless efforts. ❰ Australian Capital Territory ❱ Hopefully you were able to recharge batteries over the Christmas/New Year period and are launching in to 2012 with enthusiasm – enthusiasm, combined with goals, gets us through difficult times. This year looks like a repeat of recent years with some business areas stable (NSW Government) and some unstable (international business?) providing a challenge to developing strategies and planning. This business atmosphere elevates training to a more important role. Who was it that said: “there is only one thing worse than training staff and losing them and that is not training staff and keeping them”? How is your certification going? Mark your AIPM calendar with the following: PMAA Submissions – we need to see these early because we will be judging them earlier. The cut-off date is in May. There is an information night on 1 March on preparing a winning submission. Details will be sent soon and made available on the AIPM website. The National Government Forum will also be held in March. This is a must-attend for those who work with government departments as a staff member, contractor, supplier, partner or citizen. Finally, this is an election year for the NSW President and Chapter Councillors so make sure your contact details with AIPM are up to date. ❰ New South Wales ❱ Ducillique eiu m quatibus expliaici lla Boyd McCarron ACT Chapter President Paul Campbell NSW Chapter President CONTACT ROGER BIRCH ACT Chapter Coordinator 02 6285 2191 email@example.com Visit the AIPM website for more information on events NOTICEBOARD 1 MARCH PMAA 2012 HOW TO WRITE A WINNING SUBMISSION 29 MARCH DELIVERING GOVERNMENT PROJECTS: DOING MORE WITH LESS DON’T MISS The Delivering Government Projects forum will appeal to all those in the public and private sector who deliver government projects aimed at improving internal government efficiencies or provide and manage assets that deliver first-class community services at the lowest possible cost.
