Project Manager : Project Manager Apr May 2014
30 Project Manager Meet the RegPMs AIPM's RegPM-Certified members benefit from improved work opportunities and a boost to their CVs, as well as learning important lessons from the certification process. NATHAN KING (CPPD) Manager -- Water & Transportation, GHD Q: What are your key responsibilities? A: As a ser vice group manager, my primary functions are to secure, schedule and manage workload for the service group; achieve financial targets; and manage, mentor and ensure the safety of the team. My ser vice group currently manages 15 projects of various sizes that range from three months to three years in duration. Q: How did you wind up working in Qatar? A: I started my career as a trainee civil engineer in Cobar in central western NSW. I completed my engineering degree by cor respondence while working in various civil engineering positions in Qld, NSW and Vic. When I graduated I moved to Melbourne and was employed by GHD in its municipal engineering group. Eighteen months later I accepted a two-year posting in Qatar -- that was in 2007! In Qatar I have worked on a wide variety of projects, from road reconstruction to large subdivision developments. Due to our location, we leverage the GHD network and our projects often involve collaboration with other offices. Certain packages of work are performed offshore and GHD employees can be seconded to Qatar. While working in Qatar, I have also attained CPPD Certification through AIPM and a CPEng, and completed a Masters of Project Management. Q: Why did you seek RegPM Certification while working overseas? A: It was important to become certified in order to keep my finger on the pulse of the industry in Australia, and certification demonstrates that I am actively maintaining ties with the Australian industry and continuing my professional development. It is also important for my eventual transition back to Australia. Q: Has the experience of being certified met your expectations? A: I believe certification is for individuals who want to continue their professional development in a way that is recognised by the industry. Another benefit is access to educational resources -- while doing my Masters I used the AIPM online archive to research my assignments. Since then I have enjoyed learning about industry trends through my subscription to Project Ma nager maga zine. Q: Has RegPM certification assisted you in your career? A: I think the various educational resources and certifications offered by AIPM have definitely had an impact on my career progression, and that certification will have a greater impact on my career as time goes on and I gain more experience. THE EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES AND CERTIFICATIONS OFFERED BY AIPM HAVE DEFINITELY HAD AN IMPACT ON MY CAREER PROGRESSION MEMBERS
