UK: Gower. e management of a portfolio is a process, and a portfolio is not time-bound as a project is. Because portfolio management is di erent from the management of a single project or a program, portfolio risk assessment calls for an even broader view than the assessment of risks in a single project or program. e same principle layers can be used as above as a reference for ethical risk deliberation in portfolios, and the same distinction can be made between outcome-oriented ethics and process-oriented ethics. Visualise a portfolio as a combination of projects and programs. It has no beginning or end, new projects and programs enter it, and concluded projects and programs e xit it. Portfolio management is an integrated part of the management of the organisation, and a core issue is to ensure alignment with strategy. Risk management is an important part of the management of a project portfolio, and ethical risk assessment in portfolios can be seen in this context. e ethical decision making agents for a portfolio -- and their corresponding ethical questions -- are represented by similar categories as at project level. What potential risk, including ethical risk, can the portfolio impose on: • the project leader as an individual? • the project team? • the project organisation or project owner? • the host society? • future generations? Ultimately, the goal of this analysis is to prompt the leader, the team, the organisation and even the society that hosts the project, program or portfolio to re ect on, identify and consider the ethical concerns that might arise. e expansion of project management as a discipline, with its new frontiers in di erent business sectors and non-pro t organisations, brings with it the need for PPPM practitioners to face their responsibilities in depth. e eld of PPPM has long ago moved from a narrow technological perspective. PPP managers need to fully realise their responsibilities as project management practitioners within modern society, which needs to head towards the future in a sustainable way. is requires stepping out of the framework of conventional project management theory and into a world where PPPM becomes grounded in ethical theory and high moral standards prevail. •••
