ALEXANDRA MIDDLETON MEMBERSHIP HAS PROVIDED ME WITH A PATH OF CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT MEMBERS AFTER 41 YEARS IN THE INDUSTRY, AIR SERVICES Australia's Change Manager of Projects and Engineering Tim Morgan says he has seen a vast change in the professionalism of project management. When he rst started in the engineering eld as a trainee Technical O cer in 1973, projects were stand- alone and change management was not as valued as it is today. "Now everything is interlinked, which has increased the complexity of projects," he says. " ere is also increased interest in the bene ts and outcomes of projects. In my early days the project manager was the engineer, whereas now project management has become more of a profession and I think the AIPM has been a key driver behind that." Perks of membership A senior member of Air Services' management team, Morgan can account for the bene ts AIPM's Corporate Membership has brought the organisation. For the past eight years Air Ser vices has used its AIPM membership to reward and recognise sta . "To be invited to an AIPM dinner, forum or the National Conference is a great incentive for sta ," says Morgan. In terms of his ow n professional development, the key bene ts have been coaching and mentoring opportunities. AIPM membership has allowed Morgan to present at networking meetings and the National Conference. "Membership has provided me with a path of continuous improvement," he says. Morgan is one of 15 industry leaders who make up AIPM's PMO Community of Practice. e group meets regularly to discuss PMOs, project and portfolio management, and what they mean to each member's organisation. "It's a great environment for researching issues and questioning each other's ideas," says Morgan. "We have built a good rapport, so we can challenge each other's thinking in a non-threatening environment." e group presented its ndings to the Victoria Chapter on several occasions and participated in a panel discussion at AIPM's National Conference in 2012. Drawing on his ow n experiences, Morgan says the signi cance of AIPM to the industry is the learning environment it has created. "AIPM has set a professional standard for project managers that has raised the pro le of project managers and encouraged them to constantly strive to lift the bar." ••• CAREER Morgan's career began in 1973 with the then Department of Civil Aviation, now known as Air Ser vices Australia. He was stationed at Essendon Airport as part of a team that maintained navigational and airport facilities across Victoria and Tasmania. In the early 1990s he was promoted into Air Services' regional office, where he helped build the OH&S management system. This then morphed into a role with an emphasis on operational safety. A highlight of his career was the instrumental role he played in securing Air Services 171 certificates for technical assets of airway systems. He was rewarded with a promotion to the senior management team, overseeing 180 staff maintaining the national airways system in the southern flight region of Australia. After moving into project delivery, Morgan was accountable for the delivery of Air Ser vices' $150 million yearly capital program expenditure. He was also tasked with building the capability and skills of project managers within Air Ser vices. In his final role before his recent retirement, Morgan took on a change management position in the Projects and Engineering Group, assisting with organisational change.
