CASE STUDIES BACKGROUND BRIEFING Auckland Transport decided to implement a common project management language and base methodology across the business to ensure projects were delivered on time and on budget. Before it standardised project management within the organisation, a number of different systems were in play. Auckland Transport is a merger of the transport functions of eight local and regional councils and the Auckland Regional Transport Authority. Many of these entities used different project management processes prior to the merger, so ILX was brought in to unify these processes under one framework. Mark Townshend, Team Leader -- Project Management Office at Auckland Transport, says organising training was challenging because Auckland Transport had to coordinate the timing of workshops, resolve meeting clashes and find time for project managers to take time off for training. But, he points out, e-learning gave staff the option to complete part of their training in their own time. "It was a big move to transition to e-learning initially," he says. "Once employees were able to see how simple and practical it was to use, and that they could access it at a time that suited them, we started getting buy-in." A combination of e-learning and face-to-face teaching, as well as the incorporation of digital games into the training, helped participants learn more effectively. "The games actually solved the issue of having an online tutor because they simplified the principles being taught and had a focused approach that was linked to scoring," explains Townshend. "This enabled learning by default because people did not enjoy getting it wrong and started making a point of finding the right answer before playing the game. Better still, they lifted their game -- excuse the pun -- so once they came back to play it, they were better prepared." ALEXANDRA CAIN KEY CHALLENGE The key challenge was training a large number of people at once. "Getting people in a classroom at the same time can be challenging for organisations," says Michelle Phillips, head of Asia Pacific, ILX. "But with blended learning, people can study at their own pace and in their own time." The training included study groups in which learners could play the games before attending classroom sessions.
