www.aipm.com.au Project Manager 9 Q&A Project Manager caught up with Liz Wilson, Head of Professional Standards and Knowledge at the UK's Association for Project Management (APM) to talk about how they ensure competency standards in their members. How does APM ensure members meet competency standards? APM has a competence framework, which is linked to the APM Body of Knowledge. These are the basis for APM certification/qualifications, which play a significant part in APM's drive towards greater professionalism. However, they need to be part of a commitment to professional development. This is what we call the APM Five Dimensions of Professionalism: breadth, depth, accountability, achievement and commitment. Project manager competence and project failure seem closely aligned. Do you see a trend occurring between these two elements? Competent project management does impact project success. The key trends suggest that it is the areas of stakeholder management and communication that can make a real difference. Why is it so important to have transparent competence guidelines? Transparent competence guidelines provide two key benefits: clarity of what success looks like and a common language for all involved in projects to use. Obviously, enabling project receivers -- clients, end-users, funders and sponsors -- to have access to transparent information about what they can and should expect means they are able to challenge the professionals and hold them accountable.
