Project Manager : Project Manager June July 2012
www.aipm.com.au Project Manager 11 “ It was only a short time ago that we hovering around 100 members in Tasmania. Due to great work by previous State Presidents and Councillors, our numbers are now closing in on 150. The pleasing aspect of this increase is the interest in Certification. The aim of the Chapter is to not only increase membership but to also lift the number of RegPM’s to the national average and maintain it at that level. Our CEO Margie O’Tarpey was in Tasmania for our well- attended IT March event: ‘Nailing Jelly to a Tree’ presented by Peter Gartlan and Tony Caink of Synateq. Feedback on this event was excellent, and the Chapter followed with: ‘The Gateway Process and its variations’, presented by Nerida Plumpton of Southern Water, and a former Tas AIPM President, Kathy Kur yl. These events are the result of an initiative to recognise and present what our members would like to participate in. “ Appreciating a painting, like many things in life, involves shifting attention between an overview and the fine detail. The Chapter has addressed some big themes at its recent forums – the recognition of portfolio project management, PMO's and managing complexity through an exploration of the NBN rollout, to mention a few. These events have been well supported and we will continue to broach the overarching and strategic topics, like an upcoming forum on the delivery of some of Victoria’s major projects. But so we don’t miss tactical considerations and pointed lessons, the Chapter also wants to hold some more focused events addressing practical matters such as time r isk management and project- related dispute resolution. Meanwhile, two more social- orientated events are coming up – a young and emerging professionals industry networking event and the 2012 Victorian PMAA. Over the past few months, we have held a number of successful events and will continue to line up a number of forums and Special Interest Group (SIG) events. It is also a good opportunity to attend upcoming events to build your CPD points. I'd like to thank Nova Systems for sponsoring the 2012 EPP SIG events. “ Mark Newton has taken leave to attend to intense activity at work and at home, and I will be filling in for a couple of months. My particular focus is as the convenor of WA’s Women in Project Management. We are working hard to increase the engagement of women in the profession, as well as with the AIPM itself. In the past month, the Chapter Council has been encouraging young professionals through sponsorship of the AIPM University Student awards and by attending the Edith Cowan University Career day. The hot topic on everyone’s lips in this thriving State is: ‘How do we work to achieve the vision of transforming Port Hedland and Karratha into the major cities of the north west?’ Bunbur y is also thriving, partiularly for AIPM, with good attendance expected at their next event. All this diverse activity illustrates the challenges of meeting the needs of our members – across gender, geography and experience.
