Project Manager : Project Manager April May 2012
www.aipm.com.au Project Manager 13 “ how often have you heard someone say that they would not have believed or understood unless they had seen it with their own eyes? This sentiment goes back to biblical times but seems perennial. So much of our everyday working world is filled with schedules, spreadsheets, diagrams and other abstractions. It is therefore refreshing to see the project on the ground. Seeing and hearing about the management of projects in their context adds an extra dimension to understanding the challenges and achievements. One opportunity to gain insights like these is by attending a guided visit in April of a 2011 victorian PMAA major project category winner: AAMI Stadium, Melbourne ’s spectacular new sporting arena. vic Chapter is also making regional projects more accessible with an expanded series of regional events. First up, Geelong is playing host to a seminar on strategic development projects in April. aIPM neWs ChaPters • NOtIceBOARD »MID-2012 WIPM EVENT WITH SHELLy PARk, TELSTRA bUSINESS WOMAN OF THE yEAR, HAS bEEN RESCHEDULED. At our networking night, over 90 new and current members and guests attended. We also held three Special Interest Group (SIG) sessions including Women in Project Management (WIPM), PMO and emerging Project Professionals (ePP). These SIGs are starting to gain momentum with an increase in the number of attendees. We continue focusing on providing excellent events and forums to all our SA members and setting an exciting 2012 events calendar. Keep an eye out for forums that present new and informative information, learning and development opportunities and networking events. The SA Chapter would like to strongly encourage our SA members to submit an entry into the 2012 Project Management Achievement Awards (PMAA). “ Maria Skillern has stepped down as TAS Chapter President due to work commitments, but will continue to support the chapter as a State Councillor. On behalf of the national board and Tasmanian Chapter, I would like to take the opportunity to thank Maria for her outstanding work during her tenure as State President. Along with our State Council, I look forward to catching up with members and potential members both at regular events, and travels interstate to promote the benefits of membership and certification. We will also continue to meet students and trainees at every opportunity to support and advise on a career in project management. Our first event of 2012, ‘It’s a Winner’, on preparing a winning submission, was well attended and raised interest in the PMAA Awards. The signs are excellent that Tasmania will have strong entries for the national event. “ It’s been a busy start to the year: a sell out breakfast, ‘The Art of Getting Things done’ conference, a new PM Forum in Port hedland, and another meeting for the bunbury PM Forum. The WIPM group are also operational again and planning events for the year. We have reached record numbers, with more than 800 WA Chapter members. Thank you for your support and for promoting the association. More employers are looking at membership and certification. It is becoming increasingly important to use your post nominals and to make sure you look for them when hiring. We have also recognised educational achievement for those studying project management in universities. Interest in the Project Management Achievement Awards is increasing with the first eOI received before the official opening! Talk to your clients for their approval now to get this rolling.
