Project Manager : Project Manager April May 2012
the roll out IPMA certification was implemented through various vehicles: road shows launched the program; office champions were identified to build local ownership; and the company’s intranet was used to share online tools and templates. “ We hope the certification will raise the profile of our project managers as well as the project m an agement profession. “ We see the profession benefitting from a progra m like this. It highlights the rigorous standards to which project managers adhere and serves to generate demand for our skills and competencies.” •• • www.aipm.com.au Project Manager 9 In dePth • What is pmexcellence? IPMA certification is one of a number of professional development initiatives within Coffey Projects’ pmExcellence program. The brainchild of Coffey Projects Group Executive Tom Tucker, pmExcellence is based on the belief that in a business where your main selling point is people and the services you provide to clients, then developing people is paramount to your success. RegPM (Registered Project Manager) is AIPM’s project management certification program. Project managers starting their certification journey would be advised to take RegPM before looking to other programs like IPMA certification, said AIPM National President David Hudson. He goes on to explain AIPM’s relationship with IPMA. “ We are delighted to partner with IPMA for the delivery of IPMA assessment in Australia. Our IPMA membership brings great value: it endorses AIPM as the only professional body entitled to deliver the IPMA certification in Australia and allows us to openly and objectively benchmark AIPM certification in a global context. “ We remain fundamentally committed to the national certification system. AIPM certification is the most logical and relevant starting point in a professional pathway. “ T here is solid international respect for the AIPM system and the way that we have fundamentally linked our approach to workplace competency. “T he best way to view the AIPM and IPMA programs is that they are different, not better or worse than each other. Any sort of ‘them and us’ comparison is unproductive in our new international dialogue. “ We all work to different personal professional drivers; some members may like to take the IPMA assessment out of curiosity, others may have an immediate career requirement for an international ‘gong’. But our expectation is that the significant majority of Australian project managers will continue to value and support our excellent national system. “We are working on pathways to allow an AIPM CPPM, for example, to retrospectively undertake the IPMA equivalent, or for that matter to facilitate a concurrent AIPM/IPMA assessment process.” For more information about RegPM visit the AIPM website at www.aipm.com.au/html/regpm.cfm FIrst step In the CertIFICatIon journey
