32 Project Manager Movers&Shakers THE LATEST APPOINTMENTS AND MOVES BY PROJECT MANAGEMENT PROFESSIONALS • CAREER CENTRE NEW ADVISOR TO QLD TREASURY CORP Recently appointed Senior Advisor – Project Management for the Queensland Treasury Corporation, Greg Austin provides procurement and project management advisory services to a portfolio of Government-owned corporations and Local Government clients. He is a Certified Practicing Project Manager and construction management specialist with more than 16 years’ project management experience. An AIPM member since 2005, Austin is completing a Masters of Project Management. Prior to the role with Queensland Treasury Corporation, he delivered large and complex health and education projects in Queensland as a senior consulting project manager for a large multidisciplinary consulting firm. CIO UPGRADES STATE GOVERNMENT IT Emily Morgan has recently commenced a six-month contract as CIO with the NSW Department of Premier and Cabinet (DPC). In this role, Morgan will kick-start a restructure of the various groups that provide IT to the DPC. The project will create an internal IT function which may ultimately lead to the creation of a permanent CIO role, a position the DPC has never had in place. Previously, Morgan had been working as an interim executive. Most recently, she provided maternity leave cover for the Director of Marketing, Communications & Customer Service at the Sydney Opera House. In this role, she also stood in for the CIO and assisted in the restructuring of the Sydney Opera House IT team. NEW MD AT EXCO Perth-based Exco Resources has appointed Geoff Laing as Managing Director. He has been Acting CEO since the resignation of the previous MD, Michael Anderson, in August 2011. A chemical engineer with more than 20 years of experience in the mining industry, Laing also has an MBA from the University of Western Australia. His involvement in the mining industry includes project development, both within Australia and overseas, including major projects for Norilsk Nickel, Anglo Platinum, BHP Billiton and Phelps Dodge. HSBC EXTENDS FINANCE TO MINING PROJECTS Global bank HSBC has appointed a new head of Project Finance Metals and Mining. Alan Park will lead the development of HSBC’s mining-focused project finance business, both globally and for the Asia- Pacific region, along with the bank’s project finance team and resources and energy group. The move indicates plans for the Australian arm of HSBC to expand its project finance capability for the mining industry. The bank has also pointed out the significant export and investment flows between Australia and emerging markets, such as China. NEW CEO HEADS AIPM Margie O’Tarpey joined the Australian Institute of Project Management (AIPM) as CEO in February. She brings a wealth of experience in professional associations and public sector management. “Margie has a very impressive track record in the management of membership and not-for-profit organisations and, as fate would have it, had a burning desire to take up the role in AIPM,” said AIPM National President David Hudson. Prior to joining AIPM, O’Tarpey was involved in the program management of high-profile initiatives for Sydney City Council.
