According to a project manager network in the UK, the average project manager will have eight concurrent projects under their belt. This is occurring in industries delivering ser vices to the economy and social infrastructure, such as health, education and the law, which ser ve the needs of society. Delivering capital-intensive infrastructures is a complex process. It requires long-term planning, teamwork , an understanding of alternative procurement methods, cost and people management and project delivery. On completion, the contract management framework for the long operational phase of the project must be established. Central to the project implementation process is the project manager who is required to lead the project control group and deal with the many r isks, uncertainties, natural and man-made events that can lead to delays, cost overruns and post-commissioning disputes. Infrastructure projects can present significant challenges, particularly in developing countries where the obstacles may include difficult terrain, climate and the relatively low skills levels of the workforce. Australian project managers frequently excel in these conditions and experienced graduates are in much demand in the Asia-Pacific, the Middle East and South America. Recent projections by the World Bank anticipate unprecedented infrastructure investment in developing countries in the coming decade.
