Project Manager : Project Manager Aug Sep 2011
www.aipm.com.au Project Manager 35 CAREER CENTRE • I was attracted to project management because it can be such a varied job. I enjoy meeting new people with diverse skills and experience, and working with them in a project team. My background is as varied as my current role. My first degree was a Bachelor of Science, majoring in Environmental Science. I then pursued a Graduate Diploma of Property Studies and entered the workforce, holding various roles including a stint as Environmental Officer at Brisbane City Council. But it still didn’t feel like I’d found my career path, so I went back to university and enrolled in a graduate project management program. Eighteen months later I landed my current role as project manager of major electrical infrastructure projects. It can be hard when you’re starting out as many employers demand experience. I recommend networking to help you get a foot in the door. It can be daunting at first but it’s worth it. Another tactic is to get involved in any organisations and special interest groups. For example, I am currently involved with the IPMA World Congress 2011 Young Crew Workshop. The more you get your name out there, the more likely it is that people will remember you – and you never know who will want to give you a job or mentor you. ••• I studied Industrial Design at UNSW before landing in the IT industry as a project manager, which is not that far removed as both require a good dose of logic, science and creativity. I’ve since worked with some very talented people across industries, delivering a variety of technologies. The most recent highlight was graduating with highest overall achievement fro m the University of Sydney (Master of Project Management). It was quite a pleasant surprise as there was no shortage of challenges (both my children were born during the course and I was already balancing a demanding full-time job). My career began like many others – as an ‘accidental’ project manager. One minute I’m contributing in an operational capacity and the next I’m suddenly responsible for delivering the project. The best piece of advice I can give, my mentor in the UK embodied: “Project management success is not about ‘you’ as an individual, but it’s all about bringing the team with you to share the journey. After all, it takes much more than just ‘individuals’ to deliver a successful project.” I’m still in the process of mastering this, but recognising personalities and respecting individuals certainly makes the journey more enjoyable. «I RECOMMEND NETWORKING TO HELP YOU GET A FOOT IN THE DOOR» «ONE MINUTE I’M CONTRIBUTING IN AN OPERATIONAL CAPACITY AND THE NEXT I’M SUDDENLY RESPONSIBLE FOR DELIVERING THE PROJECT» LIBBY ROSE PROJECT MANAGER, ENERGEX ROBERT MA PROGRAM MANAGER, DATACOM YOUNG CREW WORKSHOP 2011 8-9 OCTOBER For the first time, the international IPMA Young Crew Workshop will be held in Brisbane, Qld.
