SPECIAL INTEREST Women in project management have a powerful advocate – a special interest group of the AIPM dedicated to raising their profile and providing professional support. CLOSING THE GENDER GAP More and more women are being drawn to the profession of project management as it offers a legitimate pathway to senior management and is an increasingly in-demand skill – a nd the success of Women in Project Management (WIPM) proves it. WIPM is a special interest group (SIG) of the AIPM. It was formed to give women the opportunity to interact and feel supported in a profession where they are often underrepresented. Professional development The WIPM network allows women to share information, innovation and opinions that will benefit them on a professional as well as a personal level. It does this by hosting events and workshops with industry experts. All AIPM members can access certification and continuing professional development (CPD) opportunities by participating in WIPM events. In June, WIPM in South Australia and Women in Engineering held a workshop on leadership and influence where women learnt to recognise and value their teamworking and communication expertise. The two-hour interactive workshop, facilitated by Kym Williams from Business Risk Solutions, covered skill building topics and activities including attributes of leaders on collaborative projects and the creation of a professional development plan. At the same event, Melissa Mellen, a chartered engineer and Telstra SA Business Woman of the Year, spoke about her role providing engineering expertise to developers and all tiers of government.
