Project Manager : Project Manager Aug Sep 2011
10 Project Manager • IN DEPTH It is not too dramatic to say that the project management industry is at an inflection point in its history. Given this pivotal time, AIPM asks all members to participate in upcoming elections to ensure the Institute is led by the best possible Board. The goal is to leverage AIPM’s leadership of the project management community in Australia and increase its influence on the global stage. Elections will take place in September this year for the positions of National President and three National Directors. Our vision The maturity of project management in recent years has fundamentally changed the profession. As a result, AIPM is becoming a bigger player in the global market, particularly as a member of the Asia-Pacific Federation of Project Management and the International Project Management Association. AIPM’s vision, as stated in the Strategic Plan (2010–2015), is as follows: “Australian Institute of Project Management to be recognised by business, industry, and government, as the key promoter, developer and leader in project management professionalism.” In order to deliver on the vision and support the growing prominence of the AIPM, a strong Board of Directors is needed. Make a difference The opportunity now arises for you, AIPM members, to consider taking a more active role in the leadership of your Institute by: • nominating as a candidate for one of the four Board positions; and • voting in the upcoming elections and exercising your right to support nominees. The Board needs members with enough industr y expertise to make meaningful judgements about strategy and risk. They will also be able to take on specialised committee tasks and represent the diverse member (and industr y) views to capture the interests of other stakeholders important for the future of AIPM. Board Directors will also have enough time and experience to advise the CEO on a range of leadership issues: • strategic expertise – able to review the strategy through constructive questioning and suggestion; • accounting and finance – able to read and comprehend the company’s accounts, financial material presented to the Board and financial reporting requirements; • legal – understand and adhere to the Board’s responsibility in overseeing compliance with numerous laws as well as understanding an individual Director ’s legal duties and responsibilities; • managing risk – able to manage areas of major risk to the organisation; • industry knowledge – experience in similar organisations or industries; and • independence – able to work as part of a group to achieve the Institute’s goals not their individual objectives. It is an important and rewarding role that carries with it the duties and obligations of good governance as a Company Director. If you would like more information, visit the AIPM website at [link to come]. Alternatively, speak with your Chapter President, who is also a Board Director, or the CEO Sheryle Moon on 02 8288 8750. For those who are not quite ready to take on this role, talk to your Chapter President about other ways you can become more involved in the AIPM. ••• SAVE THE DATE All members please look out for the call for nominations for the Board vacancies and information on the election as follows: Election procedures approved by the Board: 2 and 3 July 2011 Nominations open: Friday, 5 August 2011 Nominations close: Friday, 19 August 2011, at 4pm AEST Ballot (if required) commences: Monday, 5 September 2011 Ballot (if required) closes: Monday, 19 September 2011, at 4pm AEST Declaration of result at AGM: Monday, 10 October 2011 The Board encourages all members to consider the opportunity for a greater role within the AIPM and enhancing the importance of project management within our region.
