www.aipm.com.au Project Manager 7 NEWS • CEOs facing crisis of confidence ‘WICKED’ PROBLEMS NEED FINESSE Complex projects with a high degree of ambiguity and unknown risk require highly skilled project managers to finesse ‘wicked’ problems, according to a report by the Alliancing Association of Australasia (AAA). Undertaken by RMIT and Victoria University, the study found that traditional infrastructure procurement methods and basic project management only deal with ‘tame ’ problems; and that more was needed for ‘messier ’ problems. “The infrastructure industry needs to improve productivity to overcome issues with skills shortages, project delays and government funding constraints,” said Alain Mignot, AAA CEO. Australian CEOs are losing confidence in the economy, according to The CEO Institute Business Confidence Index. The Index drew responses from almost 200 CEOs and resulted in a rating of 30, down from 45 in October 2010 and 39 in February (on a scale of 100 to -100). The CEO Institute Business Confidence Index is a commissioned quarterly survey of The CEO Institute’s members, tracking CEO expectations of business and economic outlook. National spokesperson, Mr Evan Davies, said the dichotomy was that CEOs were more confident in their own businesses than in the economy overall. If the downward trend continued, business confidence would move into the negative within 12 months. “While CEOs are reasonably confident about their own businesses over the next three months, they are worried about the exchange rate and the possibility of government decisions taking the economy in the wrong direction,” he said.
