Project Manager : June July 2011
Project Manager 42 THE LAST WORD AIPM is at a crossroads of significant change. Academically and professionally, we are moving forward in leaps and bounds. Perhaps the most significant milestones in recent months are: • AIPM was admitted a full member of the IPMA (International Project Management Association); and • Two AIPM members were nominated to participate in an international discussion on project management standards and certification guidelines. World stage At the March meeting of the IPMA Council of Delegates in Riga, Latvia, there was a healthy discussion on the nature of competency standards and the regulatory parameters that govern the international certification framework. Together with several other international colleagues, two Australian delegates – fellow Director, Queensland Chapter President David Hudson and myself – were nominated as the program leads to drive the international certification and standards redevelopment program. The goal is to create a strong mature working model that can be rolled out in IPMA member countries around the world. The main challenge will be to make sure we maximise the similarities between countries and minimise the differences. Our commitment David has been appointed the Pro gram Manager, while I will take on the Pro ject Manager role. Currently, the program leads engage three to four times per week . An international workshop is planned for September, which the pro gram leads will facilitate, and more than 50 countries will be invited to participate. We have a chance to progress the project management profession and promote change – a very exciting prospect! But remember, this achievement is thanks to the professionalism of AIPM members. We would not have reached this significant milestone without your support of your industry body. Our involvement with IPMA is also reco gnition AIPM is, in the eyes of the world, a leading project management institution. This is highlighted by the speed with which we gained full membership. We did it in 12 months – it usually takes three years. We are considered a major player on the world stage and, arguably, an important contributor to shaping the future of the profession. So stay tuned – the next few years will be very interesting for project management.
