Project Manager : June July 2011
Project Manager 40 • CAREER CENTRE 4 THE MECHANICS OF PROJECT MANAGEMENT Some project management purists will be asking: “but what about the mechanics of project management?” The beauty of project management is that it can (and should) be tailored to a project, taking into consideration the project management maturity of the organisation and the complexity of the project. Documentation for the APCD project reflected the relative project management immaturity of the organisation. That is to say that ‘out of the box’ project management documents were tailored for ease of use and understanding by the project team. Prior to formal project commencement, a detailed work breakdown structure and schedule were developed. These were used effectively to justify a change to the original timeframes. The schedule was realistic, within the limitations of the available reso urces, and provided a clear understanding of the critical path early on in the project. The project schedule was maintained and progress monitored throughout the project. 5 PROJECT INTEGRATION AND REPORTING All too often in government projects, project meetings and reporting focus on the ‘administrivia’ that do not provide the project manager and sponsors with the ‘real’ status of the project. The APCD project team had very focused meetings and produced reports that measured the progress of the report against major milestones. Where risks, issues or unknowns were identified, they were discussed and assigned for resolution. The meetings also focused on decision making so that the team had clear direction. Where decisions were beyond the remit of the project manager, these were escalated to the project sponsor. Project integration is about effective leadership and purposeful management and the APCD project had this in bucketloads. Jim Rohn said: “Success is neither magical nor mysterious. Success is the natural consequence of consistently applying the fundamentals.” He is absolutely right. Success is not some aspiration that is achieved by magic – it is simply achieved by doing those things that we know how to do well. It is up to the project sponsor and project team to set up the project for success . Focusing on the fundamentals is, in my opinion, the key. Now, back to the golf course to improve my putting ...
