22 Project Manager Applying this equipment and materials to such a unique environment as Koolan Island’s flooded main pit has meant a lot of planning. “When I first saw the size of the barges that we expected to put the drills on I thought, ‘My god, I don’t this is going to work’. But obviously the marine architects had done the numbers and knew about the weight and size of the rigs, so you have to rely on them.” Another problem was fastening the drill rig to the wall, given the significant amount of back pressure that drilling would apply. “There was a little bit of ‘Crikey, I hope this is going to work’ and it did,” Moore said. “I would say that 90 per cent of the • COVER STORY things we had our fingers crossed about have worked out, and in other areas we’ve learnt as we’ve gone on how to streamline processes. “ We had to be ultra conser vative given the uncertainties associated with the project. Nobody had even seen the wall since 2003. We had some photographs of what the wall looked like back then, but as we pumped the water out we’ve been finding things that we didn’t anticipate.” The array of unknowns involved in the project and the extreme isolation of the mine – Koolan Island is 1900km north of Perth and 130km north of Derby – has meant Moore has had to keep a lot of materials on WE SOUGHT PARTNERS WHO HAD THE EXPERTISE ...
